The Early Crow

Hampden FNLMatch Previews | North Warrnambool’s Matthew Wines will etch his name into Hampden Football Netball League history thisweekend, becoming the new games record holder in the competition as he moves past Damian Dobson’s long-standing mark of 360 senior matches.

Wines, who began his senior career 21 seasons ago, has built a reputation as one of the most durable, consistent and respected competitors the league has ever seen. Across more than two decades, he has
combined toughness with elite game sense, earning admiration from teammates, opponents and officials alike within the Hampden Football Netball League.

The milestone is expected to be officially reached at Bushfield on Saturday, where a large crowd is anticipated to witness a moment that may stand untouched for generations. In an era where player
movement, injuries and professional demands often shorten careers, Wines’ achievement highlights extraordinary longevity at the community football level.

While his career has been decorated with individual honours, Wines’ legacy was further cemented last season when he played a key role in North Warrnambool’s historic inaugural premiership. That triumph remains one of the proudest moments in the club’s history, and a fitting reward for a player who has given so much over such a long period.

Within the Eagles’ program at North Warrnambool Eagles, Wines—affectionately known by teammates as “Snooze”—is regarded as a cornerstone figure, not just for his on-field performances but for his leadership and influence on younger players coming through the ranks.
