AFL Vic BarwonGeelong Advertiser | ST JOSEPH’S has staged a stunning last-quarter fight back to snatch victory over Grovedale at Burdoo Reserve.

The Tigers were in a strong position midway through the final quarter before the never-say-die Joeys struck back in the fading light, with champion forward Dale Carson floating forward to put his side back in front.

The footy was locked inside Joeys’ forward half during the frantic final minutes before the result was iced with a number of behinds, pushing the eventual margin out to 11 points — 13.16 (94) to 12.11 (83).

The final quarter stretched 35 minutes.

Across town, Colac, who only last week were made to look off-pace by St Joeys, staged a gutsy upset 45-point win over Bell Park after star forward Kane Leersen’s three-match ban was overturned at the appeals hearing this morning.

Bell Park will be sweating on the fitness of Tim Sheringham, who hobbled from the field late in the game after once again leading from the front.

On a day of high drama, Geelong Amateur went on a goalkicking onslaught against Newcomb, only hours after co-coach Kaine Marsh departed the club.

Ammos kicked a whopping 41.35 (281) to Newcomb’s 0.2 (2).

Warning bells must be ringing loud at Elderslie Reserve after Newtown & Chilwell dropped its second straight match, smashed by a red-hot Leopold that is firming as the early premiership contender. Final scores 18.4 (112) to 8.13 (61)

The Eagles are a long way off where many expected them to be, after admitting they showed a lack of respect for South Barwon in last week’s season opener.

St Albans responded with vigour after last week’s scrappy loss, pumping hapless Lara in a result that could have been even bigger had the Supersaints taken all their chances.

Drysdale’s season is in limbo after being overrun by Modewarre, losing by 22 points. While 1-2 is far from panic stations, the way they have played would be of concern for veteran coach John Fitzgerald.

That is not to take away from Modewarre, who have been battered by bad luck already this season and showed enormous fight to not only claw back into today’s game but run over the top of the Hawks.
