StJosephs fcGeelong Advertiser | ST Joseph’s settled after an undisciplined start to thrash South Barwon and temporarily surge to the top of the GFL ladder in their annual Anzac Day clash on Saturday.

Joeys piled on 16 of the final 18 goals as they gave the Swans a lesson in wet weather football to win by 77 points and maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

“I thought in the first quarter our discipline was down. South (Barwon) came out to get under our skin, which they have every right to do,” St Joseph’s coach Heath Jamieson said.

“We had four reversals and one 50m penalty, which I was absolutely filthy about and told the boys at the first break that they must lift the discipline.

“After that they were good. Once the theatrics were over the best footy side was always going to win the game — I thought that was us today.”

Geelong VFL player Kieren Paliouras, in his first game as Joeys captain, was proud of the way his team responded after South Barwon brought the heat in the opening term.

“We knew it was going to be a hot contest and I think they got on top of us a little early, so it took us a bit of time to react,” Paliouras said. “Once we settled, I think we just did the basics pretty well and then the game turned our way.”
