geelongamateur spotlightGeelong Advertiser | GEELONG Amateur co-coach Rowan McSparron says his side is wary of Anglesea’s new-found running power heading into Saturday’s clash at Alcoa Oval.

The Roos sit fourth on the BFL Ladder after a 2-1 start to the season, kickstarted by a statement-making win over Barwon Heads in Round 1.

But it was their surging second half against Queenscliff last round, where they kicked eight of the last 10 goals to fall five points short, that showed Anglesea’s ability to run out games.

“They were pretty close to taking the points against Queenscliff,” McSparron said.

“They’ve well and truly been in every match so far and they’re finishing off games.

“No doubt (coach) Jason Armistead has got the boys fit down there this year and they’re a young side with a heap of run in their legs, so we’re going to have to be ready for that.”

Ammos are third on the ladder but can now turn its focus back to footy after a tumultuous fortnight that resulted in co-coach Kaine Marsh departing the club.

The club is hoping to confirm Marsh’s replacement in the coming days.

“But that’s footy and these things happen,” McSparron said. “Look at Barry O’Toole at Corio, he had other commitments that dragged him away from the coaching role.

“It’s not the first time and it won’t be the last. Marshy put in a heap of work during the pre-season and at the start of the year and for different reasons he’s decided to part ways.

“He’s a fantastic fella and I’m sure he’ll bounce back.”

Ammos pair Aaron Guilmartin and Josh Westwood face fitness tests after missing three weeks with injuries.

Both players pulled up sore from the opening-round smashing of Ocean Grove.

McSparron admits his side is still several weeks away from its best football, after plenty of off-season player movement both in and out of the club.

“We’re obviously a work in progress,” he said. “We’ve got a few new faces into the team from last year’s premiership – seven or eight or so in there, so it’s a fairly new group.

“As I said, it’s going to take time to jell, but we’re pretty happy with the progress. Training has been good, we’ve just got to put some of those things into games.”
