east warrnamboolThe Standard | TYRONNE Grayson has spearheaded East Warrnambool to its second-consecutive Warrnambool and District league triumph.

Coach Paul Butters was left guessing how long it had been since the Bombers achieved the feat after his men defeated Russells Creek 12.16 (88) to 10.7 (67).

Grayson was the star of the show at Reid Oval, booting five goals as the hosts kicked clear in the first half and held the Kangaroos at bay thereafter.

The win followed a hammering of Deakin University a week earlier. A third winnable match against Timboon Demons arrives in a fortnight.

“It was good to tick another box and get two in a row, we probably haven’t done that for eight or nine years. It’s another little achievement,” Butters said.

“We did talk pre-season about our goal to win more games than we did last year...If we are going to improve, we need to string games together.

“It’s been spoken about, not being over-confident and being ready to go, work on getting the ball in our hands and getting our hands dirty.”

Butters said the Bombers never felt in control until the final five minutes. “The last quarter we kicked 2.10. Maybe if we kicked a bit straighter we could’ve won a bit easier,” he said. “But full credit to Russells Creek. They applied a lot more pressure this week than we saw the week before.”

He played up their work at the stoppages. Ruckman Jordan Collins figured prominently while Blake Rudland-Castles loomed dangerous throughout.

“Blake was one of those players who looked like he would break the game open and Chris (Edwards) worked hard for four quarters,” Butters said. “But it was more Tyronne, he had a standout game, kicked five goals. Every time he got the ball or had a shot on goal he made it count.

“He was the difference in the end. Last week we had Jono Malone and this week Tyronne popped up with multiple goals.”

Butters was unsure whether the break for interleague had come at a good time for East. Its back-to-back wins followed five defeats to start the season.

“Time will tell whether it’s good or bad. The lads have played seven hard games in a row, a week to freshen up will probably help both teams,” he said.

“I don’t know what Timboon is like injury-wise but it’ll be good for us to freshen up and reload.”

Aaron McInnes (three) and Matt Foster (two) were the Kangaroos’ multiple goalkickers while defender Lucas Hussey-Moran was their best.

Chris Bellman, assistant coach Izaac Dwyer, first-gamer Taylem Wason and veteran Shaun McDougall were also effective contributors.
