THE Yarra Valley Mountain District league has reclaimed its place in country Victoria’s top 10 leagues after thumping the Mallee league at Woori Yallock on Saturday.
Michael Fowkes booted 12 goals, including five in a first-quarter onslaught, as Yarra Valley raced to a 25.12 (162) to 8.7 (55) win.
Fowkes collected his side’s best player medal, while Coleman Schache took top honours for the Mallee.
Yarra Valley is now ranked No. 10 and next year will take on Gippsland, the league it lost to last year.
THE Sunraysia league will go back to the drawing board after sliding out of the top 10 rankings on the back of a 13-point loss to the Murray league on Saturday.
Sunraysia held a five-point lead at the first change on its home turf at City Oval in Mildura.
But the game soon slipped from its grasp, as Murray slotted six goals to two in the second quarter.
Former Collingwood player Brad Dick booted five goals — including the sealer — for Murray in its 13.8 (86) to 10.13 (73) win.
THE Gippsland league suffered its third loss to Bendigo in five seasons on Saturday.
Despite fielding 15 interleague first-timers, Bendigo led at every change in front of a home crowd at Queen Elizabeth Oval to run out 34-point winners, 19.14 (128) to 13.16 (94).
Former St Kilda star Stephen Milne made the most of his return to a big stage, bagging nine goals.
Darren Sheen slotted four goals for Gippsland.
FOUR goals apiece from James Gray and Tory Ziems helped the Tallangatta and District league to a 111-point thrashing of the Kyabram District league at Albury on Saturday.
Tallangatta was 12 points up at the main break after a low-scoring first half, but blew the game open with six goals in the first five minutes of the third term.
After a 21-goal second half, the home side triumphed 24.9 (153) to 6.6 (42).
