FORMER Essendon and St Kilda player Andrew Lovett has escaped serious injury in the aftermath of his first game for Red Cliffs on Saturday.
Reports circulating after the match suggested Lovett may have suffered a broken leg in the dying moments of the game, but Red Cliffs coach Troy Moncur said his boom recruit escaped with a rolled ankle.
“He’s fine. When I spoke to him (today) he was pretty confident he’ll be right for next week,” Moncur said.
“He was a bit ginger after being run down from behind, but he played out the rest of the game with no issues.”
The 2005 Anzac Day medallist signed at the Tigers on the Thursday before the weekend’s game and Moncur said he would be better for the run.
“It was his first competitive match for the season so his fitness was a bit down and he blew up pretty early,” he said. “We were always aware that it would take three or four games for Andrew to get back to his best, but we look forward to him being a big contributor for us in the second half of the season.”
Lovett kicked one goal in the Tigers’ surprise one-point loss to Mildura.
