Weekly Wrap | This weekend saw some long overdue celebrations for several clubs as they posted their first wins for the 2022 season.
Up north, it was Echuca United FNC in the Murray FNL who snapped a 364 day winless streak with a surprise 15 point victory over Numurkah FNC. Other the first time 2022 winners this week were the Western Eagles FNC in Colac and District FNL who reversed an early season 90 point loss against Otway Districts FNC to register their first win and Rosebud FNC in Division 1 of the Mornington Peninsula Nepean FNL, who chalked up win number one against Red Hill NFC by 5 points.
For all the first time winners this week, there were 5 league leading clubs who tasted defeat for the first time as well. In the Central Highlands FNL it was Gordon FNC going down for the first time by 40 points to Skipton FNC, across in the Maryborough Castlemaine District FNL Trentham FNC lost to 4th placed Harcourt FNC by 5 points while in the Omeo & District FNL it was Lindenow South FNC losing for the first time. In the Hampden FNL, the Warrnambool FNC kicked 8.18 66 to lose to Hamilton Kangaroos FNC who managed 10.7 67, whereas in Division 1 of the MPNFNL, the straight kicking Bonbeach FNC with 6.6 42 managed to hold out the wayward Mt Eliza FNC who kicked 5.11 41. The Saints kicked a whopping 55.28 358 whilst holding Meringur FNC scoreless for the match. This is the 3rd highest score for the 2022 season so far and the second highest winning margin to date.
With a big score comes a big bag of goals and Bambill FNC forward Bradley Congress had a day out kicking a bag of 24 goals in his club's big win. The haul of 24 is the largest tally so far this season by an individual in Victorian country senior matches and has also rocketed him to the top of the list of goal kickers with a total of 87 so far. Second on the list is Marong FNC’s Brandyn Grenfell who himself had a big day out kicking a bag of 10 to take him onto 81 goals for the season, 6 goals ahead of Natte Bealiba FNC’s Danny Brewester who sits third on the table with 75.
