The Weekly Wrap | The action on the field may have been limited this King's Birthday weekend with only seventeen leagues in action, but there was certainly no shortage of headlines across country Victoria.
The biggest off-field story of the week came in the South West District FNL where Tyrendarra FNC found itself under significant community pressure regarding the future of a player previously convicted of child sex offences. Meanwhile, the possibility of further league realignment emerged in central Victoria with both the Marong FNC and Maiden Gully YCW FNC from the Loddon Valley FNL both calling special meetings to discuss potential applications to join the Bendigo FNL before the June 30th deadline. The Bendigo FNL league has also indicated it is open to revisiting a second-tier structure as concerns continue regarding the competitive divide between its clubs across the region.
Further west, AFL Western District announced plans to commence a major review of football structures across the Hampden FNL, Warrnambool & District FNL, Mininera & District FNL and South West District FNL’s. The project, called the "Road Map", will place existing competition structures under the microscope as officials look to ensure football remains sustainable throughout the region in coming years.
There was also plenty of AFL related news filtering through local football circles. Former St Kilda FC defender Jimmy Webster was ruled out mid week of what was set to be his debut appearance for Lavington FNC due to injury. However, country football fans won't have to wait much longer to see another AFL star in action, with former Hawthorn champion Cyril Rioli confirming he will line up for Tongala FNC later this month when they take on Cobram FNC in the Murray FNL on June 27th.
With only seventeen leagues playing due to the King's Birthday weekend, both the Colac & District FNL and Geelong & District FNL used the opportunity to stage their Under 25 interleague clash. Coached by former Geelong player Paul Lynch, the Geelong & District FNL proved far too strong, running away 106 point winners 18.21 129 to 3.5 23.
Two clubs celebrated significant milestones over the weekend, with both Inglewood FNC and Albury FNC marking their 150th anniversaries. The celebrations went much more smoothly for Inglewood, who defeated Bears Lagoon Serpentine FNC by 42 points in the Loddon Valley FNL, 15.12 102 to 9.6 60.
Albury FNC looked set to produce the perfect anniversary celebration after storming back from seven goals down against Wodonga FNC in the Ovens & Murray FNL. The Tigers hit the front late in the game and appeared destined to cap off their celebrations with a memorable win before Wodonga's Matt Wilson kicked the match winning goal in the dying seconds. The Bulldogs escaped with a dramatic 12.8 80 to 11.10 76 victory, leaving the home crowd heartbroken.
Several winning streaks also came to an end this weekend as undefeated sides finally met their match. In the Warrnambool & District FNL, Russells Creek FNC entered the round having won eight straight matches before running into fellow unbeaten side Allansford FNC. The Cats proved too strong, recording a 35 point victory and extending their own unbeaten run to nine games. In the Gippsland FNL, Warragul FNC's six game, 1 draw winning streak was snapped by Moe FNC, with the Lions remaining undefeated through eight rounds and further strengthening their premiership credentials.
A much longer drought was finally broken in the Ovens & Murray FNL. Corowa Rutherglen FNC defeated Yarrawonga FNC 12.7 79 to 9.12 66 to record its first victory over the Pigeons in eighteen years, ending one of the more remarkable hoodoos in Victorian country football.
There were several thrilling finishes across the state this weekend. In the Heathcote & District FNL, Mount Pleasant FNC and Heathcote FNC could not be separated, both finishing on 15.8 98 with the draw keeping Mount Pleasant's impressive sixteen game unbeaten streak intact.
Two matches were decided by a solitary point. In the Geelong FNL, St Joseph's FNC edged Leopold FNC 13.14 92 to 13.13 91 in another classic contest between the two clubs. The West Gippsland FNC also produced a nailbiter with bottom placed Korumburra Bena FNC falling agonisingly short against Cora Lynn FNC, 12.14 86 to 12.13 85 in its effort to register their first win for the 2026 season.
Former AFL stars again made headlines around the grounds. Ex North Melbourne champion Ben Cunnington continued his return from injury for Warrnambool FNC in the Hampden FNL, booting five goals in return game number 2 as part of a 19 point victory over Terang Mortlake FNC. In the Bellarine FNL, former Richmond and Western Bulldogs forward Sam Lloyd produced a vintage display with nine goals in Geelong Amateur FNC's 51 point win over Portarlington FNC.
The biggest individual performance of the weekend belonged to former Essendon defender Michael Hartley, who turned forward and kicked an incredible fifteen goals for Castlemaine FNC in the biggest score of the round. Castlemaine piled on 35.14 224 to defeat Broadford FNC by 207 points after Broadford managed just 2.5 17. Kai Mounsey also enjoyed another productive afternoon in front of goal, kicking ten majors for Neerim Neerim South FNC in its 124 point victory over Catani FNC in the Ellinbank & District FNL.
Two more players reached the 50 goal milestone after this weekend's games with Longwarry FNC's Jason Wells kicking two goals to move onto 51 for the season, while Allansford FNC spearhead Robbie Hare kicked seven to bring up exactly 50 goals so far.
Despite those milestones, the overall leaderboard remains largely unchanged due to the number of general byes this weekend.. Kiewa Sandy Creek FNC's Guy Telford continues to lead the state with 61 goals, ahead of Carisbrook FNC's Tim Rinaldi on 54 and Foster FNC's Brett Eddy on 52. Wells now sits fourth on 51 goals, while Hare rounds out the top five on 50 goals. With the halfway point of the season approaching, the race for country football's leading goalkicker remains one of the most fascinating storylines of 2026.
