The Weekly Wrap | The off field spotlight remained firmly on league movement this week, with another significant twist in what is shaping as one of the busiest club transfer periods in recent seasons.
Dalyston FNC's bid to leave the West Gippsland FNC and join the Ellinbank & District FNL in 2027 has officially been rejected after it was revealed the Ellinbank league amended its constitution last year to cap the competition at 12 clubs. Meanwhile, Officer FNC formally lodged an application to leave the Outer East FNL in favour of joining the Southern FNL from 2027, while reports also emerged that the Eastern FNL and Outer East FNL have begun exploring the possibility of merging within the next two years as well.
On the field, representative football returned with the Goulburn Valley FNL making the trip to Melbourne to take on a combined VAFA Premier B–Division 3 representative side at Elsternwick Park.The Goulburn Valley held its own early, trailing just 2.0 (12) to 1.0 (6) at quarter time before the VAFA outfit took complete control. Despite kicking into the breeze during the second quarter, the home side piled on 8.3 (51) to lead the Goulburn Valley's 1.2 (8) at the main break before finishing with a devastating ten-goal final term to record a commanding 20.9 (129) to 5.8 (38) victory. The Goulburn Valley FNL will be eager to turn the tables when the return fixture heads to Deakin Reserve in Shepparton next season.
Despite wild and windy conditions affecting many parts of Victoria, it was another extraordinary weekend for big scores, with eight clubs surpassing the 200 point barrier.
Nagambie FNC produced the performance of the round against Violet Town FNC, kicking 47.18 (300) to 0.1 (1) in the Kyabram & District FNL clash. The 300 point tally is the fourth highest score recorded in Victorian country football this season, while the 299 point winning margin ranks third for 2026. Yarra Glen FNC was equally impressive in Outer East FNL Division 2, piling on 37.31 (253) against Yarra Junction FNC, while Heyfield FNC continued its outstanding season in the North Gippsland FNL with 36.25 (241) against Traralgon Tyers United FNC. Harcourt FNC also topped the double century in the Maryborough Castlemaine District FNL, kicking 35.21 (231), while Lancaster FNC rounded out the weekend's 200-point scorers with 31.23 (209) against Girgarre FNC.
There was no shortage of drama at the other end of the spectrum.
In the Bellarine FNL, Geelong Amateur FNC survived a remarkable comeback from Newcomb FNC. Leading by 28 points at the final change, the Ammos were forced to withstand a five goal five behind last quarter from Newcomb FNC before escaping with a thrilling 16.6 (102) to 14.17 (101) victory. Longwood FNC almost produced one of their greatest comebacks in the Kyabram & District FNL. Trailing Undera FNC by 38 points at three quarter time, Longwood slammed on seven final quarter goals before falling agonisingly short, 14.8 (92) to 13.13 (91).
Poor kicking proved costly once again in Mornington Peninsula Nepean FNL Division One where Frankston YCW FNC finished with 7.19 (61), including a behind in the 29th minute of the final quarter, to lose by a solitary point to Mornington FNC, 9.8 (62). Inaccurate kicking almost cost Rumbalara FNC its second victory of the season in the Murray FNL, as they defeated Echuca United FNC 9.12 (66) to 10.5 (65) in another one point thriller.
Scoring also proved almost impossible for several clubs across the round with Heywood FNC held to just 0.6 (6) against Tyrendarra FNC in the South West District FNL, while Sale FNC managed only 0.7 (7) against Warragul FNC in the Gippsland FNL. Heathmere FNC also struggled in the South West District FNL, finishing with just 1.2 (8) against ladder leader Dartmoor FNC.
One of the more remarkable statistical contrasts came between competitions.
The Warrnambool & District FNL produced one of the tightest rounds of the season, with only one club scoring more than fifty points. Across the four matches, the combined totals were just 98, 73, 71 and 61 points, while the average winning margin sat at only 13.25 points. At the opposite end of the scale, Outer East FNL Division One again produced another lopsided round with an average winning margin of 106 points which is the fifth occasion this season the competition has averaged a triple figure margin across a round.
The weekend saw several long winning streaks also come to an end. Top of the table Cowwarr FNC suffered its first defeat of the season in the North Gippsland FNL, with fellow premiership contender Woodside FNC claiming a significant 17.8 (110) to 11.16 (82) victory to end Cowwarr's eleven game winning streak. In the Horsham & District FNL, Harrow Balmoral FNC saw a nine match unbeaten run snapped by third placed Noradjuha Quantong FNC as poor kicking proved costly for theRoos, finishing with 4.14 (38) in an eighteen point defeat.
Sebastopol FNC also strengthened its premiership credentials in the Ballarat FNL by ending Ballarat FNC's eight game winning streak with an impressive 31 point victory. While these winning streaks ended, several clubs finally enjoyed singing the song after lengthy waits.Rennie FNC ended a fifteen game losing streak in the Picola & District FNL, defeating Mathoura FNC 13.9 (87) to 11.13 (79) to record its first victory of the season. Nilma Darnum FNC also celebrated its first win in eleven weeks, edging Poowong FNC by three points in the Ellinbank & District FNL.
Former AFL talent again featured prominently across the state. Ex Melbourne forward Michael Newton kicked another nine goals for Whorouly FNC to climb into equal fifth on the statewide goal kicking leaderboard. Former Richmond and Western Bulldogs forward Sam Lloyd continued his brilliant season with seven goals and best on ground honours for Geelong Amateur FNC in its thrilling one point win over Newcomb FNC.
At Warrnambool, former North Melbourne star Ben Cunnington booted five goals as the Blues kept their Hampden FNL finals hopes alive with a 40-point victory over third placed Koroit FNC. Former Essendon excitement machine Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti was also among the best in the Sunraysia FNL, kicking four goals and earning best-on-ground honours for Merbein FNC against Imperials FNC.
The biggest individual performance of the weekend belonged to Nagambie FNC spearhead Tom Barnes, who kicked a staggering 23 goals against Violet Town FNC also claiming the biggest individual haul recorded anywhere in Victorian country football so far for this season.
Kyle Graham finished with fifteen goals for Heyfield FNC, while Lachie Sharp added another eleven for Bridgewater FNC. Jake Best, Nick Costello, Christian Howlett, Frazer Judd and Morrie Serra all reached double figures with ten goal performances.
Two more forwards joined the fifty goal club this weekend, with Dominic Dare reaching 51 goals for Alvie FNC and Corey Smith also moving to 51 goals for North Wangaratta FNC.
At the top of the statewide goal kicking race, Kiewa Sandy Creek FNC's Guy Telford retains the lead despite his competition enjoying a bye, remaining on 89 goals. Bridgewater FNC's Lachie Sharp has closed the gap to just two goals after another eleven goal haul and now sits on 87.
Tom Barnes' incredible 23 goal performance launched him into outright third on 81 goals, while Carisbrook FNC's Tim Rinaldi remained on 79 after his club's bye. Cowwarr FNC's Keenan Hughes and Whorouly FNC's Michael Newton are now locked together on 77 goals, setting up what is becoming a fascinating race to be the first to hit the century mark for season 2026.
