After three games and more than six hours of footy, a total of eight points has separated the Victorian Amateur Football Association and WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country.
The VAFA Seniors clinched the showcase game against the AFL Victoria Country No.1 side by just three points, after earlier triumphing by four points in the U19s clash.
The country boys were able to reverse the ledger in the AFL Victoria Country vs VAFA (Prem B - Div 4) match, winning by a single point and ensuring all three games were decided by less than goal.
VAFA wins arm-wrestle
When the main game got under way at 2.00pm, two epic battles had already been waged.
As if knowing what was expected the two teams fought out another thrilling contest that hung in the balance until the final siren.
When Geelong league star Jai Sheahan booted his fourth goal of the game with only minutes left, the country boys had drawn level on 79 points apiece and a come-from-behind victory loomed.
But the VAFA stood firm, steering through three behinds to post a 11.16 (82) to 11.13 (79) victory.
Mornington Peninsula Nepean league gun Shane McDonald was a star throughout, with his clever ball-use and hard-hitting approach pivotal in the wet conditions.
The long kicking of Tom Sheldon and the balling winning of Brendon Hollow ensured the Goulburn Valley league was well represented in Country's best players, while Gippsland league tough nut Luke Collins lifted in the final term to be also among the top performers.
Key backman Tyson Hartwig (Ovens and Murray FL) and Leigh Burke (Bendigo FL) could both hold their heads high, and Tim Looby (Goulburn Valley) impressed when he went forward in the second half.
Brendon Goss led the way for the VAFA seniors with four goals, while Ross Young, Peter Summer and Ryan Colbert were other key players.
GrainCorp No.2 prevails in thriller
The AFL Victoria Country GrainCorp No.2 side has pinched a stirring victory over the VAFA (Prem B – Div 4).
Down by as much as 15 points mid-way through the final term, the country boys responded with an inspired finish to triumph 14.16 (100) to 15.9 (99).
Murray league star Ryan Bongetti was the hero with a long running goal in the dying minutes to steal back the lead.
Captain Adam Sewell (Central Highlands FL) then took a telling mark in defence to ensure the men in white held on to their advantage.
Another Central Highlands league gun Dean Kelly was voted best-on-ground for his game on the half forward line, while Dean Warry (Ellinbank and District FL) was also a key contributor.
The country boys led by 27 points at half time but were left standing still as the VAFA Seconds powered past them in a dominant third term. It was a similar story at the start of the last quarter as the Ammos went more than two goals ahead before before Country's late rally.
EnergySafe U19s go down kicking
Captain of the AFL Victoria Country EnergySafe U19s Hamish Morecom had the game on his boot with a shot after the final siren against the VAFA U19s.
Unfortunately for Morcom, his missed set shot was fitting of the final result which saw the country boys go down 5.21 (51) to VAFA 7.13 (55).
Early inaccuracy from the men in white became like a virus that soon spread throughout the whole side. In perfect conditions, Country dominated possession but failed to make it count on the scoreboard.
Ovens and Murray league forward Josh Porter bagged three goals but could have three or four more if his luck had been different.
Fellow O&M representatives Lee Dale and Connor Hargreaves were also among the better players, with Dale prolific through the midfield and Hargreaves damaging off half back.
The long raking left foot of Sam Martyn (Benalla), the clearance work of Tom Gribble (Geelong FL) and the courage of Grey Hay (Ballarat FL) were other standout performances.
VAFA Seniors 5.1, 8.4, 10.9, 11.16 (82)
WorkSafe AFL Vic Country No.1 4.4, 6.8, 8.11, 11.13 (79)
