A new adversary awaits WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country's premier representative side in 2014.
For the first time in more than 20 years, the best players from country Victoria will take on a Metro senior representative team – comprising of players from all six senior metropolitan competitions.
The Country v Metro showdown has been tentatively set down for July with an exact date and destination to be finalised in the coming months.
The WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country No.1 side, to be coached again by Hawthorn legend Peter Knights, will be selected from all country leagues that compete in WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country Championships for a blockbuster clash against Melbourne's best.
Knights will be pitted against his former Hawthorn premiership teammate in Peter Schwab, who will take charge of the Metro All-star team.
AFL Victoria Country General Manager Brett Connell said the match promised to be the highlight of 2014 football calendar.
"The game will be a great showcase for community football and give country Victoria's best footballers the chance to play against the highest standard opposition possible.
"Selection in the WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country No.1 side already represents a supreme honour for country footballers and we expect to this to be even more so next year."
Connell said AFL Victoria Country remained committed to a representative program for the Vic 2 side.
"Discussions are continuing regarding the WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country No.2 side, which has traditionally been picked from leagues seeded 11 and below on the WorkSafe Country Championships rankings table," he said
"Vic No.2 are an integral component of our representative system and gives more players a chance to wear the Big V and to test themselves at a higher level."
Over the past 20 years, WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country (formerly the VCFL) representative sides have traditionally competed bi-annually against the Victorian Amateur Football Association.
This season, the WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country No.1 side lost a thrilling encounter with the VAFA's premier side, while Vic No.2 was victorious.
Players from the VAFA are expected to figure heavily in the Metro representative team, as the competition has been named the top seed of the six metropolitan leagues.
The initial Metro squad will be selected following a triple header to be played on the eve of the 2014 season involving the six competitions.
