gippflGippsland Times | A NINE-goal to three second half gave Maffra a 60-point win at Bairnsdale on Sunday.

The 16.13 (109) to 7.7 (49) victory makes the Eagles one of three unbeaten teams after two rounds of Gippsland League football.

Best-on-ground Danny Butcher kicked at least a goal a quarter, finishing with five.

Onballer Winston Gieschen drifted forward to kick three goals. Daniel O'Brien and Daniel Bedggood kicked two goals each.

Kel Porter combined well with Gieschen on the ball, while Joel Lambourn and James Hammill kept the Redlegs' forwards honest.

Half-forward Nathan Dennsion and key defender Stephen Henshaw were the Redlegs' best players.

At a wet Bairnsdale City Oval, the home team began better, kicking the first two goals before the Eagles booted four of the next five goals, including two from Gieschen, to lead by eight points at the first change.

Kicking goals proved more difficult during the second term with only four registered. The Eagles booted three of them to extend their lead to 13 points by half-time.

The Eagles led by 31 points after kicking three goals to two in the third term.

The Eagles killed off any hopes the Redlegs would have had of a stunning comeback victory by kicking the first five goals of the final term, including two from Butcher.

Maffra will receive a sterner test on Saturday night when it hosts ladder leader Leongatha.

Parrots on top

LEONGATHA maintained top spot with victory over local rival Wonthaggi on Saturday night.

Marred by wet weather, the match at Leongatha became low-scoring slog with the Parrots winning 8.13 (61) to 3.9 (27).

The Power failed to kick a goal in the second half, while the Parrots booted four.

The home side's midfield dominated its opponents.

Tas Clingan, Dale Hoghton and Ben Willis the Parrots' better players, with Cade Maskell booting four goals.

Happy Hawks

DROUIN defeated Warragul by 53 points on Saturday night.

Ben Hughes kicked four goals against his old team, a number matched by coach Bob McCallum as the Hawks won 15.10 (100) to 7.5 (47). Cameron Hall was pivotal in the midfield for the Hawks.

Maroons rebound

TRARALGON bounced back from a big round one loss to account for Moe on Saturday afternoon.

Led by coach Mark Collison, who had 28 touches, the Maroons won 17.17 (119) to 9.9 (63). Lee Stockdale kicked five goals and Tim Johnston four.

Trailing by 38 points at half-time, the Lions got to within 12 points during the third term, but the home side, despite not having fit players on the bench, responded strongly.

Moe coach Adrian Burgiel kicked four goals.
