beaconsfieldA SUBURBAN football club president has stepped down after strippers were allegedly hired to perform at a players’ function.

The Herald Sun understands Beaconsfield Football Club in Melbourne’s South was forced to apologise to its sponsors after strippers attended the senior’s team function.

A statement on the club’s website stated an “inappropriate event” occurred at a recent club function, as a result of a “spur of the moment decision made on the night”.

“What occurred is not illegal but is definitely not in keeping with the Beaconsfield Football Club’s social and community conscience and expected standards of behaviour,” the statement read.

“As a result, Gary Valentine has put the club first and atoned for this error in judgment by stepping down as president.

A statement issued by the Beaconsfield Football Club following the stripper incident.

“The Beaconsfield Football Club sincerely apologises to anyone that may have been offended and we assure you that we will work even harder to make sure that we meet the sociably accepted standard that our clubs players, members, supporters, sponsors and local community expect and deserve.”

The club has an under 18s team, an under 19s team and a senior team as well as a youth women’s team.

Speaking to the Herald Sun, Mr Valentine said stepping down was a “personal decision”.

“I did it to protect the club,” Mr Valentine said.
