tungamah01Weekly Times | TUNGAMAH’S Ash Saunders said he was relieved to kick his 100th goal this season in the dying embers of Saturday’s fixture against Katandra.

The 21-year-old started the match needing 11 goals to reach the ton from 11 games in the Picola and District league South East division.

Saunders was more than halfway there at half-time with seven majors, and despite a goal-less third term and some wayward kicking, he achieved the feat five minutes before the final siren. He finished with 11.9 for the match.

“It was good to get it over and done with,” Saunders said. “I’d hate to go into next week with one or two to get — there would be a lot more pressure.”

The Tungamah product, who is now based in Yarrawonga, said the opposition went to great lengths to stop him reaching the milestone.

“When I got to 99, Katandra dropped three or four players back, so when the ball came in, I just plucked one out of the middle of the pack,” he said.

Saunders kicked 34 goals last season for the Bears, but the big man had to take on the side’s rucking duties when the team’s ruckman was injured. The departure of spearheads such as Lee James, who kicked 92 goals last year, led to a permanent move forward.

The Bears won their 39th straight match 19.22 (136) to 7.7 (49).
