AFLcountry thumbWeekly Times | VICTORIA Country scored a clean sweep against the Victorian Amateur Football Association in Bendigo on Saturday, capped by Vic Country No.1 claiming the Brian Molony Cup.

Colbinabbin’s Grant Weeks was unstoppable in the forward line against VAFA Premier at the Queen Elizabeth Oval, kicking seven goals as Victoria Country No. 1 stormed to a 62-point win, 17.15 (117) to 8.7 (55).

Victoria Country seized control in the third quarter, when the side kicked six goals to one to lead by 46 points at three-quarter time.

Albury’s Brayden O’Hara, Mt Eliza’s Justin Van Unen and Rochester’s Steven Stroobants kicked two goals apiece  and O’Hara, Tigers teammate Dean Polo and Drouin’s Dan Nicholls were all instrumental to the win.

Victorian showdown

VAFA won the Brian Molony Cup by three points in 2013, and by a goal in 2011.

Victoria Country No. 1 coach Peter Knights was taken aback by the margin of Saturday’s win, but also pleased the players gained such a reward for their efforts and commitment.

“It was a real relief in that last quarter to know we had the game won and to be able to enjoy it and know the players could enjoy it as well,” Knights said.

Earlier in the day Victoria Country No. 2 overcame a slow start in wet conditions to beat VAFA Premier B-Division 4, 10.16 (76) to 7.5 (47), while Victoria Country under-19 made the most of a three-goal headstart before the rain arrived to beat VAFA under-19, 8.13 (61) to 1.6 (12).
