pdfnlWeekly Times |STRATHMERTON has ended Jerilderie’s premiership streak in the Picola and District league North West division by claiming a 16-point win in yesterday’s grand final.

The Demons were going for their fourth premiership in a row, having won the past two against the Bulldogs.

But Strathmerton banished its own demons by claiming its first flag since 2010, winning 12.13 (85) to 10.9 (69).

It was a huge reward for fifth year co-coach Tim Bramich, who partnered with first year playing coach Matt Shannon this year.

Bramich said there was a huge sense of “relief” after the disappointments of 2013 and 2014, and the 61-point semi-final win two weeks ago was also a boost going into the decider.

“(Going in we were) confident but knowing they’ve won two in a row ... we couldn’t be too confident but the semi was good, because the semi made us realise we could beat them,” he said.

Strathmerton kicked the first three goals of the match, which Bramich said was very important. The Bulldogs led the whole match, kicking out to as much as a 33-point lead 28 minutes into the first term which the Demons were never able to recuperate.

“If they had got the first few I reckon it could’ve (allowed) the doubt to set in, so it was good,” Bramich said.

Strathmerton’s Brad O’Connor, who kicked four goals for the match, received the best-on ground medal, but Murray Bushrangers rookie Brayden Coburn received the nod from within the team ranks.

Jerilderie’s Aaron Purcell threatened to steal the game off his own boot in the third quarter. Twice in that term he kicked two goals within a matter of minutes to bring the deficit back to 10 points, including two to close out the quarter. He finished with five goals for the match.
