Former Essendon player Andrew Lovett will play for Maffra this Sunday against Bairnsdale.

IN a big day at Maffra, the Eagles will host Bairnsdale this Sunday during round two of Gippsland League football.

Not only will be Eagles side feature former AFL player Andrew Lovett, coach Hayden Burgiel will be playing his 200th senior game for the club.

Burgiel has been a key player for Maffra over an extended period, featuring strongly in its seven premiership wins, including two as coach.

Andrew Lovett, who played 88 AFL games with Essendon and received the Anzac Day medal in 2005 for best-on-ground in the match against Collingwood, will be making a special appearance in Eagles’ red and black.

Burgiel said Lovett would add extra experience which Maffra was looking to get it over the line.

“Andrew brings 88 games of AFL experience and will be able to help out our younger players while injecting that lightning pace and accuracy in front of goals that he has been famous for in his AFL career,” he said.

Eagles president Brett Millington indicated Lovett would be a major drawcard for the day and was hoping he put on a show for the community.

“Andrew has shown in his AFL career that he can play an exciting brand of football and we are hoping that he can put on a great performance for the crowd on the day,” he said.

The Maffra Football-Netball Club is urging members, spectators and the wider football community to come along to the game and watch a former AFL player run around. The senior game will begin at 2.20pm.

“Bring the family along for a great day of football and netball action which is sure not to disappoint,” Millington said.

Lovett will be at the club’s training tonight from 6.30pm and then be available for autographs after training. He will also be a guest speaker at the club’s sportsman’s night tomorrow from 7pm and before the game against Bairnsdale on Sunday.

To purchase tickets for the sportsman’s night, visit the club or phone Millington on 0400 520 400.
