MAFFRA overcame an early scare to record a 40-point win at Drouin to maintain third place on the Gippsland League football ladder.
The Eagles will need a better performance next weekend when they host ladder leader Morwell.
Drouin kicked six goals to one in the first term for a 27-point lead. The Eagles could have been closer, but could only kick one goal from six scoring shots.
The tables were turned in the second term with the Eagles kicking six goals to one with the Hawks wasteful in front of goal. The visitors led by two points at half-time.
The Eagles controlled the match in the second half, extending their lead to 21 points at three-quarter-time with a four unanswered goals in the third term before a four-goal to two final quarter to win 15.17 (107) to 9.13 (67), Darren Sheen kicked six goals and Daniel Bedggood five.
Matt Lee was prominent in defence for the Eagles, while Alex Coleman used the ball well on the wing, as did James Hammill, who has fitted in well since joining the club at the start of the season.
Brod Fraser worked hard in the ruck for the Hawks, while Jordan Wyatt played well on the half-forward line. Keegan Boot kicked three goals.
Tigers still on top
MORWELL maintained top spot with a 31-point home win over Bairnsdale.
The Tigers kicked six unanswered goals in the first half and led by as much as 70 points before the Redlegs came back in the final term, kicking six goals to one. The home side won 15.12 (102) to 10.11 (71).
It was the Tigers’ first win over Bairnsdale since the Redlegs returned to this competition in 2011.
Forward Adam Bailey, ruckman Tom Crosby and onballer Dean MacDonald, who kicked four goals, were the Tigers’ best. Former Collingwood player Tarkyn Lockyer kicked a goal.
Kane Ashwood tried hard to win the ball in the centre for the Redlegs, while Mark Sellings kicked four goals.
Maroons thump Moe
TRARALGON recorded its biggest win over Moe since 1997, thumping the Lions by 142 points, 27.19 (181) to 5.9 (39).
The Maroons kicked 9.6 to 0.0 in the first term and never looked back.
Kim Harrold, Adrian Slottje and Jackson Hall were the Maroons’ best with Ashleigh Dugan kicking eight goals, Jackson Hall six and Slottje five.
Power wins under lights
WONTHAGGI scored its first win at Leongatha since 2002 on Saturday night.
The Power won 9.13 (67) to 6.7 (43).
After trailing by eight points at quarter-time, the Power kicked four goals to one in the second term to lead the low-scoring match by 15 points at half-time.
The visitors kicked four goals to three in the second half to win by 24 points.
Earl Shaw had the better of the ruck duels for the Power, while Jack Blair and Lee Warnett got plenty of the ball.
Zac Vernon were the Parrots’ best.
