DARREN Sheen kicked a league record, equaling seven goals in the first quarter on his way to 10 for the match, as Maffra defeated Moe by 91 points.

Sheen's first term efforts matched the Gippsland League record set by Churchill's Steven Sanders against Traralgon-Tyers United in 1984.

Sheen had a chance to hold the record on his own, but his shot drifted across the goal.

Sheen must enjoy playing against Moe. In round one against the Lions he also kicked 10 goals.

His 10 goals last weekend took him to 51 for the season, 13 ahead of the next best, Sale's Mitch Davis.

The match was effectively over by quarter-time, with the Eagles booting 10 unanswered goals to lead by 61 points. The Lions' first goal didn't come until the ninth minute of the second term.

The Eagles did not appear worried by the conditions, which were affected by recent heavy rain, easily finding teammates in space and moving the ball well up the field.

Kel Porter, Dan O'Brien, Jackson Scott, Jack Doderico and captain Ben Batalha were getting the ball at will across the ground, setting the tone for the remainder of the match.

Playing in front of his opponent, Sheen finished off this teammates' good work.

Rare Moe forward forays were stopped well by the Eagles' defence.

Lions coach Jason Macfarlane's quarter-time address could be heard around the ground.

The Lions did improve after the first break, with the Eagles narrowly winning the remaining quarters on their way to a winning 18.16 (124) to 5.3 (33).

Sheen came off the ground after kicking his 10th goal during the final term, with a possible hand injury.

John James was the Lions' best, playing off half-back.

Ben Morrow did well in the ruck for the visitors, with James Blaser continuing his outstanding season in a struggling side.

Bryce Collings and 250-game Peter Ainsworth also played well on the wing.
