Zac Stewart was the first to join the long list of sidelined senior players, before promising teenager Josh Haggar shortly followed suit.

Stunned and wounded, the Lions went into the first break five goals and a number of rotations down.

That quarter-time lead was steadily trimmed as the Lions won two of the proceeding three quarters of football – including the last, impressively without a bench – but the damage had already been done in Monbulk’s blitzing first term.

“We lost young Josh Haggar, who’s a young kid we have in the side, (he) broke his collarbone; we lost Zac Stewart within the first 10 minutes of the game and we had no bench after three-quarter time,” Green said of the new additions to the injury list.

“It’s just been one of those years where – know all sides have them – but we seem to have a lot more injuries, we have seven players out of our best side.
