East Gippsland FNLGippsland Times | Ask any footballer what they play for, and the answer is a premiership.

It’s not all they play for, however, because witnessing emotions unfold as Boisdale-Briagolong Football-Netball Club soaked up its first senior premiership in 23 years points to so much more than that.

Footy clubs aren’t just a roster of 22 players, a coach, or a captain, although they embody the hopes of hundreds of members and supporters, all carried onto the field each week with the dream of finishing the season in a grand final.

Words like sacrifice, volunteerism, and selflessness summarise what it takes to win a premiership. Anyone who stuck around to watch the Bombers sing, laugh, and cry together saw this.

Players might not mention that they’re playing for a community – but that’s what football clubs are.

After Saturday’s medal and trophy presentation at Bairnsdale City Oval, a sea of red and black gathered at the centre of the ground; with arms around each other, they formed a circle and belted out the club song. Among them were the Bombers’ reserves grand finalists, B and D grade netball premiership winners, friends, and family.

They finished the season just as they began it – together.
