DESPITE 10 goals from Justin Staley, Rosedale defeated Woodside by 23 points.

The 20.15 (135) to 18.4 (112) kept the Blues in third place after seven rounds of North Gippsland football.

The contest was appetising from the opening bounce with key match-ups indicating the battle that was to eventuate.

Ryan Foat carried the bulk of the ruck work for Woodside against Jon Cantwell, Rosedale's Chris Hughes was handed the task of holding Justin Staley at bay, and then there was the contest which would play out in the midfield with Dale Fleming and the Diamond brothers, Rohan and Adam, pitted against Adrian Fazioli, Josh Griffin and Clint Staley.

In a frenetic opening five minutes of play, neither side could settle as the ball moved back and forward.

Justin Staley settled the visitors, snapping to register the opening goal for Woodside and first of his 10 for the contest.

Tom Love made it two on the run with the leap of Foat matching Cantwell in the ruck contest.

The Wildcats had a third goal in a row when Damian Kerr on the wing found Matt Scholz, who set the ball up for Justin Staley to run on to and score off his shin.

Stunned, the third-place Blues responded.

Cantwell got things going crunching Fazioli in the contest, Fleming swooped on the ball before

Adam Diamond set-up Brad Scott with his first of six.

The sides went blow-for-blow with 12 majors scored in an highly entertaining first term with Rosedale snaring four goals in a row with the Diamond brothers combining, Scott adding yet another, while, at the other end, Love had two and Justin Staley was building for a large haul as he was gaining the upper hand against Hughes.

The Blues led by 14 points at the first change.

It took some time for Rosedale to open the scoring in the second term, with the Wildcats defence, led by Hank Norman and Dan Missen, working hard to contain Andrew Flanagan.

Such was the intensity, Wildcats coach Chris Pettitt's chase down and tackle was superb.

Reeling in the margin to just over a straight kick after kicking four majors to two, the Wildcats could have hit the lead if it weren't for costly lapses of concentration which led to the ball being turned over as Rosedale made the most of its chances.

Cantwell's presence was felt around the contest with Kerr brushed aside by the big man imposed himself in many passages of play. His tackling and attack were superb.

A goal from Justin Staley seconds ahead of the half-time siren put the Wildcats seven points down.

The third term was an intense affair with 12 majors scored as Rosedale gaining the momentum in the final stages.

Scott got the Blues going before Staley outmuscled Hughes to mark and goal from 20 metres out.

The Wildcats kicked 12 goals before they recorded a behind.

The Wildcats' forward pressure was immense as the Blues back line was placed under siege as they struggled to clear their defensive 50.

Establishing a five-goal break at the final change, the Blues hummed along in the final term to win.
