HE may have only played fewer than a handful of games since retiring from the elite level three seasons ago, but AFL premiership player Leigh Brown still kicked eight goals in his return to Heyfield.
A large crowd was on hand for the Kangaroos' clinical 59-point victory at Yarram, with Brown's appearance, just his sixth senior appearance for his home club, adding to the attraction of the clash between first and fifth team in North Gippsland football.
It was far from one-way traffic in the first half with the Demons mounting a gutsy second term fight back to reel the margin back to two straight kicks. The Demons continued to throw down the challenge, but four consecutive majors midway through the third term killed the contest with the undefeated Kangaroos running home comfortable victors, 18.14 (122) to 9.9 (63).
With coach Adrian Cox playing his first senior game for the season, Heyfield began strongly with Brown among the action early.
Josh Stubbe landed the first blow for the visitors before the Demons settled with youngster Jari McDonald running into goal.
Both sides' attack on the ball and man was fierce with Heyfield's Joel Dinsdale and Jack Woodland leading the tackle count. Dinsdale's tackle on defender Jack Moore set-up Brown' first goal from 40 metres out.
Both sides had their chances early with Yarram struggling to find the posts. At the opposite end of the ground Heyfield made the most of its chances.
A one-handed grab by high flyer Jesse Bedggood set-up Nic Dowse before Brown added a second.
Brown combined with Kodie Woodland to set up the visitors' fifth major.
The visitors kept the scoreboard ticking over in the second term, but it was Yarram which looked the goods. Josh Swift got the home side going, scoring the side's first major in more than 30 minutes of play - it would be the first of five for the term which help the Demons draw within 12 points of the ladder leaders.
Corbin Sutherland led the charge, the nuggetty forward setting up several majors as the Demons appeared more composed.
Setting up Stan Grazotis in front of goal, Sutherland was at it again as the Demons scored consecutive majors before Heyfield hit the scoreboard.
Grazotis then registered his second goal for the term.
Led by Jarryd Swift, Matt Clavarino and Griffin Underwood, the Demons' midfield lifted with Dan Vardy matching up well against Heyfield's ruck combination of Lukas Jenkins and Shaun Humphreys.
Working the ball forward with precision, the Demons defence was on, Ben O'Loughlin combining with Vardy and Coulthard to strike within a kick of Heyfield.
Heyfield settled as Nick Dinsdale's soccer kick from the goal square provided some breathing space before an errant handball by the Demons' defence set-up Stubbe with this second. The Kangaroos took a two-goal lead into the main change.
The third term belonged to the visitors.
Nick Dinsdale added one of the side's seven majors for the term. Dinsdale led the charge followed by Stubbe's third, Bedggood on the run, Brown from the goal square with Daniel Stevens goal killing the contest.
Defender Scott Anderson was instrumental in the back 50, Dave Kelly swept the loose ball off half-back and Jack Woodland was ferocious in his attack on the opposition.
Demon Matt Clavarino amassed possessions early and was pitted against Kelly, who worked hard to restrict the play maker's impact, Underwood toiled hard, while defender Trek Davis wasn't intimidated by Browns presence in the forward line.
Bulldogs crush Cowwarr
SALE City made a return to the winners' list, defeating Cowwarr 20.19 (139) to 11.6 (41).
Beginning strongly, the Bulldogs maintained their undefeated run at home with Jake Schuback and Nick Grainger booting six majors each.
Byron Shingles stood-out for City, amassing possessions in a strong skilful performance. Brad McKay impressed, while defender Tim Dimarco had an impact.
Lindon Brunt booted seven of the Saints' 11 majors, coach Luke Cooper played a crucial role in keeping his side in contention, with Shane Galea and Shane Morgan attack setting up the forwards.
Tough day for Bombers
IT was a tough day for Boisdale-Briagolong, who hosted a blistering Rosedale who made the most of its chances.
Pitted against the second best forward line in the competition, the Bombers' back six had their work cut out from the first bounce and did their best to counteract the Blues' many avenues to goal.
Missing league leading goal kicker Andrew Flanagan, the Blues shared the goals among 10 players with Jeremy Reid and Brandon McDonald booting six and five respectively.
The Blues boasted 13 scoring shots in the first term. Doubling their score in the second quarter, the result was decided early with Boisdale-Briagolong's Luke Conway and Adam Helmke working hard to contain the Blues' run and carry.
Playing the small space of the Boisdale ground to their benefit, the Blues added 14 majors in the second half to record a 23-goal victory, 24.18 (162) to 3.3 (21).
Adam Diamond was named the Blues' best for his efforts across half-back, while the Bombers were well-served by Leigh Fulford, Nichol Sandison and Reagan Tait.
Boost for Wildcats
WOODSIDE gave its chances of playing finals a major boost with a 37-point victory over Gormandale.
The Tigers dominated from the outset, booting six majors to one in a blistering opening term.
From there the wheels wobbled and it was the visitors who clawed their way back into the contest, winning three of the four quarters to return to the winners' list.
The Wildcats won their first game in four rounds, 15.17 (107) to 10.10 (70).
Hank Norman was at his best in a dominant performance. Clancy McAlpine was also dominant through the midfield, while Brent Kerr and Shane Kilgower battled hard when pushing inside 50, the pair booting four majors each.
