THE finals aspirations of reigning East Gippsland football premier Paynesville took a blow, going down to Lindenow with a final quarter fade out.
Leading all day to hold an 18-point buffer at three-quarter-time, the Gulls could only manage one goal in the final term while the Cats doubled its output with seven goals to run away with it, 14.13 (97) to 12.7 (79).
The victory helped Lindenow in its bid to secure a top two finish, holding a percentage point advantage of Wy Yung, while Paynesville missed an opportunity to hold its spot in the top four.
The Gulls are four points behind Lakes Entrance in fifth, but have superior percentage.
Daniel Hayes, Brayden Radford and Ben Haslam were the major scorers for Paynesville with three goals each, Ashley Pescod made a welcome return to the line-up, while Jason Waddell and Jordan Farquhar were also impressive.
Darren Allen booted four goals for the Cats, while Matt Busch and Nathan Storer each scored three majors. Midfielder David Donchi returned to form, while Todd Alexander, Will Blackley and Justin Blair were valuable contributors.
Tigers take care of Pies
WY Yung did its chances of a top two chances no harm, accounting for Lucknow in a high scoring contest, 20.13 (133) to 16.11 (107).
The Tigers made an impressive start, kicking seven goals in the opening term before adding six majors in both the second and third quarter to open up a 50-point lead.
The Magpies hit back in the final term, booting five goals to one, but the charge came too late.
Tom Smith booted eight goals for the Tigers, Mark Sellings managed five goals while midfielder Chris Wheeler set up many of their shots on goal.
Shaun Ryan was best for the Magpies, booting six majors, while Nick Fowler kicked three goals. Deven Costigan and coach Gary Jones were other valuable contributors.
Seagulls rise
LAKES Entance moved back into the top four with victory over Orbost-Snowy Rovers, 11.11 (77) to 6.8 (44).
The first half was a grind, with the Seagulls holding sway 3.7 to 1.1 at the long break. Four goals to one in the third term opened up a handy 36-point buffer, with the Blues matching the Seagulls in the final quarter.
Zach Turner booted four goals for Lakes Entrance, while mobile tall Jarrod Matthews was again among the better players.
The Blues were best served by Curtley Nettleton, who booted three goals.
