wonthaggiGippsland Times | WONTHAGGI sent a message to the rest of the Gippsland League, thumping premier Morwell by 71 points in the grand final rematch.

The Power, which has retained much of its grand final line-up, was too strong for the Tigers, weakened by key departures.

The game was in the visitors' keeping by half-time. The Power booted 13 goals to two to establish a 66-point lead at the long break before going on to win 18.15 (123) to 7.10 (52).

Joel Liddle and Aiden Lindsay, who kicked four goals, showed plenty of pace on the wings for the Power. Shannon Bray was solid in defence, while Adam Cook kicked five goals.

Tigers captain Joel Soutar tried hard to lift his side, as did Michael P. Duncan, but the premiers struggled to keep up with the Power.

Big win for Parrots

LEONGATHA recorded its biggest ever win over Traralgon, 123 points.

The Parrots proved their standing as a team to watch this season with a 24.14 (158) to 5.5 (35) victory. The Parrots' score was only four points short of their biggest against the Maroons, set in the 1995 grand final.

Jake Best booted nine goals, the best by a Leongatha player against Traralgon since 1936. Aaron Hillberg kicked five goals.

Tom Marriott controlled the midfield for the Parrots with Dale Hoghton and Aaron Heppell also providing the Maroons headaches.

Onballer Brayden Duve and defender Matt Lewellin were the Maroons' best.

Happy Hawks

DROUIN won its first game in nearly two years, defeating Bairnsdale at home.

The Hawks began well, leading by 19 points at quarter-time and 21 at half-time before kicking away to win 8.11 (59) to 13.9 (87).

The Hawks were led by Daniel Nicholls, Bob McCallum and Luke Duffy, while Ben Hughes kicked four goals.

Dylan Somerville was the Redlegs' best player.

Lions roar

MOE had a 35-point win at Warragul on Sunday.

A four-goal to one first term had the Lions on their way, however a strong third term had the Gulls within eight points at the final change. The visitors responded to the challenge, booting seven goals to three in the fourth quarter to win 15.9 (99) to 9.10 (64).

Charlie Rieniets and Tyson Biffin were Moe's best with coach Adrian Burgiel kicking four goals.

The Gulls were best served by Nick Mulqueen and Brad Scalzo.
