FORMER Sebastopol coach and North Ballarat City player Kal Young is on the move to the Central Highlands Football League.

Young has signed with Newlyn and, pending a clearance from North City in the Ballarat Football League, will make his debut for the Cats against Bungaree tomorrow.

Young had been training with Peach’s North City as late as last week, but family and work commitments meant he was unable to fully-commit to the club.

Lured by close friend Adrian Chew, Young signed with Newlyn last week.

He joins a swag of Cats players to have moved across from the BFL in recent years, including joint coach Adam Sewell, Nathan Blomeley and Luke Faull.

Sewell said his side had not gone out of the way to poach Young, rather the opportunity presented itself and it was grasped with both hands.

Young, 28, coached Sebastopol for two years and stepped down in 2011, before returning to North City last year.

At this stage it appears unlikely Young will fulfil any coaching role at Newlyn, with Sewell planning to play him in the midfield or forward line.

“His leadership and coaching knowledge will be invaluable to us,” said Sewell. “We didn’t expect to land him but I’m glad we did.”

North Ballarat City coach Rob Waters said he did not intend to stand in the road of Young.

“He will always be welcome back at the club – whether it is through coaching or something else, he is welcome.”

The Red Onion BFL officially starts tomorrow, with five matches to be played out in round one.

North City’s 2013 campaign kicks off under lights tomorrow night against East Point at Eureka Stadium.

In other matches, Ballarat hosts Lake Wendouree, Bacchus Marsh and Sebastopol will both try to bounce back from opening round losses, Melton South will travel to Redan and Sunbury will look to make it two-from-two at home against Darley.
