Logo KangarooFlatBendigo Advertiser |KANGAROO Flat president Greg McClure says the Roos’ committee remains confident Jason Stevens is the right coach to lead the club into next year.

Kangaroo Flat coach Jason Stevens.

Stevens is in his second season as coach of the Roos and was last month re-appointed for a third year in 2016.

However, since the reappointment was announced, the Roos have lost to Sandhurst (86 points), South Bendigo (47) and Strathfieldsaye (137), during which they have been outscored 54 goals to 13 and their finals aspirations have all but evaporated.

McClure says recent results haven’t forced a re-think in the club’s decision to reappoint Stevens, who he says continues to have the support of the committee.

“The injury-riddled season we’ve had… it wouldn’t matter if you had Darryl Wilson (Strathfieldsaye premiership coach) coaching the side, it wouldn’t have gone any better,” McClure said on Sunday.

“We’ve been decimated by injuries and the biggest problem Jason has had is he just hasn’t had the cattle to choose from.

“That’s the way the year has gone and there’s nothing we can do about it, but this is the first time in three years we’ve been able to begin recruiting this early because we have our coach in place.

“We understand this year is now a write-off and that we’re not going to play finals, but from here it’s all about next season.

“The whole committee is behind Jason. He needs a better football department structure around him that we’re working on, but the most important thing we need at our club is stability.

“If you continue changing coaches and this, that and the other, people don’t have confidence in your club. Going forward, we’re building on having stability at the club.”

On Saturday, the Roos were thumped 24.17 (161) to 3.6 (24) by Strathfieldsaye in the first week of the BFL’s split round 16.

At Maryborough, the Magpies lost to to South Bendigo 21.19 (145) to 6.9 (45) and have now become the first BFL club since North Bendigo in 1995 to lose six in a row by at least 100 points.

And at the QEO an inaccurate Sandhurst beat Gisborne 12.20 (92) to 6.9 (45).
