FAR from wallowing in winless pity, Gisborne stuck fat.

The determined Dogs trained the house down, met to talk structures with an open mind and hit up Gisborne's Anzac Day service with heavy hearts, all in the name of sticking together. And at long last, it all paid off, Gisborne opening its Bendigo Football League account against Maryborough, 19.17 (131) to 10.9 (69).

The minnow Magpies aren't exactly ready to sweep the Bendigo FL's best off its feet but Gisborne's triumph was nonetheless significant. After all, it was Kevin Fitzgerald's first as coach and a great relief for the rookie boss.

"Our group wasn't happy with where they were at and they've been working pretty hard in the last week or so," Fitzgerald said.

"It was pretty much just rewards for the amount of work they were putting in."

Gisborne led by just two points at the first change before ramming home six unanswered goals leading into half-time to wrestle the tempo. After being accused by Fitzgerald of playing like puppies in the contested ball stakes, the Dogs finally found their renowned bite.

"That was obviously there. We were in a lot better in that department and the rest of the game falls into line when we have early possessions," Fitzgerald said.

Daniel Weaver was outstanding for Gisborne in defence, while Lachlan Crosbie and Harrison Huntley's return from Bendigo Gold proved invaluable.

Gisborne play a winless Sandhurst on Saturday and the unrewarded opponent presents a curious challenge to the with the Bendigo-based side boasting a wealth of tall timber.
