Bendigo FNLWeekly Times | A little over a decade ago, the Castlemaine Football Club determined to solve the puzzle of the club’s foundation. Its findings outraged many with an interest in country footy, but those findings are worth revisiting as we try to map out what country footy was like in 1869, the year The Weekly Times was first published.

Footy as we know it originated in Yarra Park, which is the park next to the MCG. Scotch College and Melbourne Grammar played there in August 1858 in what is believed to be the first match of what would become known as Australian football.
