FIFTEEN goals to Dan Jordan proved to be the catalyst for East Point, as it powered away to a 95-point victory over Sebastopol at Marty Busch Reserve on Saturday.
Led superbly by Jordan up forward and Jason Delaney in the midfield, the Kangaroos led comfortably for most of the afternoon, setting up the victory with a 10-goal to one opening term.
For Sebastopol, it was another tough afternoon as it tried to negate a side destined to play finals later this year.
It wasn’t however all bad news for the home side, which at times was able piece together positive passages of play, resulting in consecutive goals.
Brad Carrigg worked hard all day and was rewarded with four majors, two of which came in the third term, while Michael Powell battled manfully against opponent Bart Phillips for most of the day, finishing with five.
With the match seemingly over at quarter-time with the Kangaroos holding a 54-point lead, their attention moved to building the lead for the sake of percentage. They managed this effectively, increasing the lead to 70 points by the halfway mark and 95 points by three-quarter-time.
For Sebastopol, as it had for much of this year, the last term would come down to the amount of effort instilled on the contest. With the match done and dusted and Shawne Dummett being left to ponder another heavy defeat as Sebastopol coach, the question was raised how his side can prevent conceding large first-quarter scores, to which he simply replied, “I don’t know”.
“It was our first quarter again; it has happened nine or 10 times this year. We cannot afford to give good sides 10-goal head starts,” he said.
“I’ve been scratching my head all year trying to work out what we can do, because we fire them up before the game, we do the drills and get ready to go, and so I don’t know what else we can do.”
On the other hand, East Point coach Dan Jordan said he was happy with the opening of the game.
“I was really happy with the first half. To their credit, Sebastopol lifted in the second half and kicked a few goals, but all our guys seemed to contribute, which was pleasing,” he said.
