SUNBURY premiership player Jamie Lobb could be out for the rest of the year after fracturing bones in his foot.
The key onballer/forward flanker learnt during the week that his season might be over, receiving the worst possible news after undergoing scans on a sore foot.
It is not yet known how severe the damage is, but Lions coach Rick Horwood is not hopeful.
Lobb was at Saturday’s game at Clarke Oval on crutches and in a protective boot.
“We’ll find out in a fortnight’s time, he (Lobb) will have another scan in a fortnight and make an assessment then.
“But it doesn’t look good, we’re probably not looking for him to come back,” Horwood said.
“As a coach I just plan that he won’t be there and I’ve got to get that into our players minds that he’s finished. Unless there’s a miracle, we will cross that road if we come to it.
“It’s really sad for him too because he would have been in our top three, probably pushing for best and fairest.
“He’s had that good a season, it’s a real shame but that’s footy.”
Despite dropping just two of 14 games played this year, Sunbury coach Rick Horwood has been quick to point out all year the names that are missing from his ideal side.
As is the case with all football sides, it is almost impossible to have every player out on the field.
But for the Lions, never has it been able to get to a point where less than half a dozen premiership players are missing from the side.
It appeared Saturday’s team may have been getting close to full strength before another late week mishap again created selection headaches.
In addition to Lobb, Ryan Monzell broke his little finger after dropping a gym weight on it on Friday night, meaning he also missed Saturday’s game.
“We just can’t get below that magic six (players out of the premiership side),” Horwood said.
“It looks nearly every week like we’re going to be near full strength and something happens.”
Sunbury has the bye next week, before it faces the toughest run home, meeting both Redan and North Ballarat City in its last two matches.
