Bendigo Advertiser | FOR the first time since 2005, Castlemaine is 1-0 after the opening round of the Bendigo Football League season following a 79-point annihilation of Maryborough on Friday.
In the battle of the Magpie rivals, Maryborough proved no match as Castlemaine won 24.10 (154) to 11.9 (75) at Barkers Oval.
As well as winning in round one for the first time since 2005, Castlemaine is in the top five for the first time since round four, 2009, and its score of 24.10 was the first time it has kicked more than 20 goals in a game since 2011.
“Maryborough at Maryborough is a tough contest and we went into the game with a lot of uncertainty when looking at their team,” Castlemaine coach Shane Robertson said.
“We just didn’t know what we were going to be up against and to get the result we did was very pleasing, but Maryborough was more competitive than the scoreline indicated.”
