WAUBRA’S premiership chances have received a huge boost with the signing of former Hawthorn forward Tim Boyle.

Boyle, who played 31 games with the Hawks before retiring at the end of the 2009 season, officially joined the Roos this week and is expected to make his Central Highlands Football League debut in the club’s round eight clash with Illabarook.

The 29-year-old arrives at just the right time for the undefeated Roos, which have been left short of key forwards with the pre-season departure of Tony Mirabella and injuries to  brothers Lee and Rohan Brown.

Waubra president Chris Bourke said Boyle, who stands at more than 190cm, was a great addition to the club.

“The guys are really excited about it,” Bourke said.

“It’s always hard bringing someone in mid-season but the guys are really keen.

“It certainly fits in ... we’ve had a key forward on radar for quite a while.”

Boyle was drafted to the Hawks in 2002, but endured an injury-ravaged career which effectively ended when he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament during a match with the club’s VFL side, Box Hill, in 2009.

He finished with 39 goals at AFL level.

Boyle has not played football since leaving the Hawks, but has been training this season with Eastern Football League side Vermont.

Former Hawthorn teammate Brad Sewell writes about Boyle in today’s exclusive column in The Courier, saying he was a player ravaged by injury, but shone during the 2007 campaign.

“His role in the side that year was as the ‘floating’ forward’,” Sewell said.

“Tim’s ability to read the flight of the ball, take strong marks and kick straight became a huge asset for the team.”

Sewell said Boyle was excited about once again being involved in football at the country level.

Boyle lives in Melbourne with Waubra senior player Stuart Oliver and works with supporters of the club.
