The Cats onballer has received confirmation of an anterior cruciate ligament injury, which he sustained in the team’s round five win over Beaufort on May 11.
Newlyn joint-coach Adam Sewell said May, 27, has been booked in for reconstructive knee surgery in mid-June.
“Obviously he’s been playing some extremely good footy, last year and continued that form on this year. He’s fairly disappointed. I’m a very good mate of his and as a coach it’s not good to lose any player for the season with a knee, let alone one of your prime onballers,” Sewell told The Courier.
“It’s disappointing, but that’s part of footy.”
Sewell said May had been brilliant since returning to the club last season, winning the senior best and fairest and being named as Central Highlands Football League’s best in the breakthrough interleague victory against Ellinbank and District.
“We will keep (May) involved as much as possible. He’s still been floating around at training and been there game days. It will be good to have him on the bench, as another set of eyes and to address any concerns in the midfield as well,” Sewell said.
May, a premiership player with the Cats in 2003 and with the Ballarat Swans in 2008, finished equal fourth in last year’s Geoff Taylor Medal count, won by Hepburn’s Andy McKay.
May’s injury is a huge blow for Newlyn, which has struggled to just two wins from the opening six rounds of the 2013 season.
The Cats are 14th on the ladder, but can get the campaign back on track with a clash against unbeaten rivals Waubra tomorrow.
This weekend will see the Central Highlands return to regular home and away fixtures after last weekend’s country championships, before another break due to the Queen’s Birthday.
