ST ALBANS is leaving no stone unturned in a bid to climb the GFL ladder in 2014 after signing three high-quality players for the coming season.
The Supersaints have snared former Collingwood-listed player Danny Nicholls as assistant coach, along with star forward Ben Hughes and talented ruckman Daniel Jabornik.
St Albans improved last season under first-year coach Clinton Proctor, who said the new trio would help the club continue to improve.
"This season was a step in the right direction, we blooded a lot of young kids into our team and got some quality games into them," Proctor said.
"We identified that we needed depth in our squad, and made sure that the recruits we've added were of the right quality on and off the field.
"These guys will add great experience and depth to our squad, having come from a higher level."
Nicholls, who spent a season with Collingwood in 2006, has also played close to 100 VFL games.
It's this experience that Proctor said will be invaluable to his young side.
"I'm looking forward to coaching alongside of him he has terrific experience and knowledge of the game.
"Danny will look after the midfield, I believe he has aspirations to coach one day, so hopefully his time at St Albans will give him a great platform to build upon," he said.
It was no secret the Supersaints lacked a key forward and, after identifying this as an issue, the club headhunted former North Melbourne and Casey Scorpions forward Hughes.
Hughes is a versatile forward who stands at 193 centimetres and 95 kilograms.
"Our clearance work and midfield spread was serviceable throughout the year so the supply wasn't too bad, however we continued to struggle to put the score on the board," Proctor said.
"Only twice all season did we score over 15 goals.
"So Ben will straighten us up and allow us to have a more functional forward line."
The other piece of the puzzle St Albans was missing was a permanent ruckman.
With the 197-centimetre Jabornik moving to Geelong with work after playing with Queanbeyan, the club swooped on him.
"It's certainly a relief to get a ruckman this early in the piece and we are thrilled to have Daniel join us as he will be a fantastic addition," Proctor said.
"He works with Crossfit so he will also assist Brent Manson with our fitness and conditioning during the pre-season."
Proctor said the club must not rest on its laurels after a promising 2013 season, and said he and the club would take a proactive approach in a quest for success.
"Look, the GFL is the best competition outside of the VFL, no doubt, so we must continue to improve our kids and add quality people and players to the club, otherwise we will just fall behind," he said.
"I believe that we are heading in the right direction. I believe we have earned respect on and off the field this season, however this is just the start of what hopefully one day will be there for all to see."
