THE Gordon Football Club will be dealing from a position of strength next season, having united its playing group following a recent finals campaign in the Central Highlands Football League.
The club has wasted no time in re-signing first-year coach Corey Grills in the head role, as well as making several important inclusions to its developing list.
Learmonth assistant coach from last year Chris McGuigan has been recruited, and along with Eagle Tye Murphy, will join Grills as an on-field leader as the club looks towards a potential top-four finish in 2014.
McGuigan, who will serve as an assistant, played most of his junior football with Gordon and is excited about the prospect of joining a young team on the rise.
“I’ve been thinking about returning for a while now,” he said.
“I know Corey well from our junior days and I think it’s a pretty good time to be coming back to the club.”
Grills believes the classy small forward will add another dimension to the team with his ability to win the contested ball, but has placed no expectations on the squad for next season.
“The boys have had a taste of finals now – this season was the first time in 23 years that both our seniors and reserves have made the finals, and we think that we have a lot of depth moving forward,” Grills said.
Coincidentally, the average age of the senior playing list is roughly 23, and Grills says that bringing in more experienced players can help the team that bowed out to Daylesford in the first week of finals this year.
Gordon hasn’t ruled out the possibility of chasing more experienced players as the off-season rolls on.
“We’ve had a look at a lot of players so far,” Grills said.
“We’re after players that have had a lot of experience, particularly in finals, if we want to take that next step and push for the top four.”
