HE'S been in the thick of some of local footy's biggest tribunal cases and officiated some of the biggest games. Now, Davin Reid's attention to detail has earned him the title of Victoria's best country footy umpire.

Geelong's footy umpires scooped the pool at the recent AFL Victoria country awards, with Paul Trotter being named goal umpire of the year, Kevin McMaster volunteer of the year and Allan Grant coach of the year.

"These awards recognise the work everyone puts in," GFUL director of umpiring Scott McLeod said.

"It's good for our local clubs to know that our umpiring group is regarded as up there with not only the best in country Victoria but also country Australia."

Trotter was a successful field umpire - going as high as the VFL - before switching to flag waving and will trial as a goal umpire in the VFL for next season.

"To potentially make the VFL in two disciplines is a great achievement," McLeod said.

Reid has been one of the GFUL's highest-ranking umpires in recent years.

"He's a pro and really works hard at his umpiring and takes it very seriously in the way he upholds the laws and makes sure the game is played according to the laws," McLeod said.

GFUL stalwart McMaster was celebrated for his ongoing volunteer work, namely the often challenging task of co-ordinating the weekly umpire appointments.

Grant, who goal-umpired two AFL grand finals over 126 games, was recognised as the most outstanding umpire coach in country Victoria.

He has been the senior goal umpire coach at the GFUL for several years and has mentored current AFL goal umpires Steve Williams and Adam Wojcik.
