THE future of some local football clubs is under threat unless skyrocketing player payments are reined in, AFL Barwon boss Lee Hartman has warned.
The impact of soaring contracts from big-spending clubs across the state is the No.1 agenda item for the AFL Victoria Country Football Board this season.
While Hartman maintains spending is not out of control in Geelong, he said clubs in some country leagues were being blown out of the water and unable to compete with their wealthy rivals.
Hartman is part of a nine-member AFL Victoria panel that will spend the season investigating the impact of escalating player payments in local footy statewide.
