ST MARY’S is growing increasingly optimistic about a return to finals this GFL season on the back of a string of quality recruits.

While the signatures of former AFL players Tom Gillies and Kane Tenace have been well-documented, the Saints have also unearthed a gem from southwest Victoria.

Former Koroit star Ben Dobson will add grunt and polish through the middle and across half forward after moving to Geelong for work.

Dobson was runner-up in the Hampden league’s Maskell Medal last season after playing a major role in helping Koroit reach the grand final. He is a former Geelong Falcon and has been on the Cats’ VFL list.

Former Newtown & Chilwell star Ryan Normington has also arrived at Kardinia Park West.

While the injection of recruits will bolster the club’s push to make the finals for the first time since 2010, the club is also bullish about the potential of its younger players.

The Saints have won the past two colts premierships and half a dozen of those players are tipped to be in the frame for Round 1 selection.

The club says its recruiting has been centred on complementing its younger squad, with the firm view of keeping opportunities open for young players to stake their claim.
