QUEENSCLIFF will welcome back a host of premiership stars this weekend when up to seven players return from injury against Modewarre.

The Coutas’ depth has been stretched to breaking point this season by a spate of injuries that first hit the club during the pre-season.

Stephen Owen (collarbone) and Nik Orvis (knee), arguably the club’s most important players, are set to spearhead the inclusions this week after both copped serious setbacks in practice matches.

Goal kicker Roscoe Holmes, another vital cog in Queenscliff’s attack, also returns after battling an injury-interrupted season.

Trent Buckland, Declan Cashin, Jake Lindrea and Chris Goullet are the others in line to play against the Warriors, who have also been hit hard by injury this season. The Coutas were outclassed in the opening rounds of the season, but have recovered to 3-4 and, with the core of their premiership team back, are poised to launch a serious charge towards a fourth straight BFL flag.

“It’s a really big game against Modewarre, then we have Newcomb, so we can really turn things around and hopefully go 5-4,” Queenscliff coach Tom Limb said.

“Hopefully we start to get some momentum and come home with a wet sail, that’s the plan.”

But Limb said his side could not just expect its fortunes to change dramatically on the back of the inclusions.

“We’ve got to be mindful that we can’t just bring these guys back in and think everything changes,” he said.

“When you add a bit of class it helps — mentally and in a few one-on-one contests around the ground.

“It’s the guys who have been there consistently for a while who need to step up and perform.

“The benefit we’ve had the last few weeks is we’ve had young kids who have come in and really performed — they’re starting to perform and play consistent senior footy.

“But you’ve got the other guys coming back in, so they’re going to have to step back, but it’s been great for their development.”
