Geelong Advertiser |LOCAL clubs at risk of being banished from the GFL have expressed fears about their future if AFL Barwon follows through with restructure plans.
The AFL Barwon commission has recommended the GFL be cut from 12 teams to 10 and the GDFL swell to 14 as part of the biggest local footy shake-up in four decades.
Vulnerable clubs contacted yesterday by the Geelong Advertiser questioned why the league was so determined to make such major changes as early as next season.
The league was also accused of prioritising growth corridors in the south ahead of rejuvenating traditional heartlands in the struggling northern suburbs.
Geelong West-St Peter’s, Lara and North Shore — the GFL’s only clubs north of Ballarat Rd — would all in the gun to be axed from the region’s premier competition under the proposed restructure.
