geelongamateur spotlightGeelong Advertiser |BELLARINE powerhouse Geelong Amateur has aspirations of playing in the region’s top local footy competition.  But not next year.

Ammos president Simon Farrell yesterday confirmed his club wanted to test itself in the GFL in the coming years, having built a sound financial base around strong football and netball sides at junior and senior level.

But he feels the club needs at least another season in the BFL before pushing for promotion.

“Our ambition is we want to be in the GFL in the next few years if we can, we want to be in the premier league,” he said.

“We’ve got such a strong junior setup. This year I think we’ve got more than 750 juniors including Auskick.

“When you look at the players we’ve lost to GFL clubs in the last 20 years, we’d be quite a strong GFL club.

“I don’t think we’re quite ready to go up next year but our aim is to eventually play in the premier league.”

AFL Barwon last week revealed its blueprint for the future structure of local leagues, with the GFL to be cut from 12 teams to 10 as early as next year.
