Geelong Advertiser |GEELONG West-St Peter’s has tapped into the Northern Territory talent goldmine, securing five indigenous players with the potential to light up the GFL.
Roosters coach Andy Viola, who recently visited the Top End on a scouting mission, picked up his first wave of recruits from the airport early yesterday after a whirlwind 48 hours.
Campbell Wurramarrba, Victor Rhodes and Brenton Bading suited up for their first taste of GFL training last night, with fellow Territorians Jarrod Stokes and Simon Bates still to arrive.
The players come fresh off seasons in the Northern Territory Football League with Buffaloes and reigning premiers Wanderers.
It continues West’s audacious, wide-ranging recruiting spree that has delivered more than a dozen new faces from outside Victoria.
“I’ve coached them before, they’ve just got youth, pace and exuberance,” Viola said.
“They’re good kids. I’ve coached them before, I know what they’re capable of doing.
“Hopefully they’re going to give us a spark and help us through the season.
“We’re just ticking the boxes and doing what we can, and tapping into every resource we’ve got available to us.”
Viola’s links to the Northern Territory are strong.
He is a Wanderers premiership player and helped out with coaching while he was injured.
