denningtonThe Standard | Dennington coach Darcy Lewis has long preached the importance of a collective effort in football, the notion that one player does not make a team.

But even he had to credit the individual heroics of Alex Pye in the Dogs’ thrilling victory against Nirranda at Nirranda Recreation Reserve on Saturday.

Pye booted seven goals in a team total of 11 as Dennington opened its Warrnambool and District league account with an 11.4 (70) to 8.15 (63) win.

He did what neither of his Nirranda counterparts could — kick accurately. His last two goals could prove the most important of the season.

Nirranda had trailed by 22 points at half-time and was still 14 points in arrears at three-quarter-time.
