mcdflWeekly Times | HARCOURT well and truly has its destiny in its own hands this season.

The Lions are undefeated after seven rounds of the Maryborough Castlemaine District Football League, and second on the ladder behind two-time reigning premier Navarre.

Harcourt finished ninth last season and would love a crack at its first senior flag since it went back-to-back in 2006-07.

It just has to get through the next two months.

Five of the Lions’ next six games are against sides currently in the top six, culminating with a clash against Navarre on July 25.

And only two wins separate the top two sides, Navarre and Harcourt, from Royal Park and Natte Bealiba in fifth and sixth.

Harcourt will also be without their captain and league best-and-fairest winner Paul Chaplin, who broke his arm playing against Maryborough Rovers last month.

Coach Sean Smith, who played in three premierships with the Lions and coached them in 2008, returned to the club this season along with his brother Joel. He welcomed the start of the fixture as a perfect opportunity for the playing group to jell before tackling some tough challenges.

“It’s easy to sit here and say we’ll be the side to (topple Navarre), but ... we need things to fall our way,” Smith said.
