Weekly Times | ONE of Emerald’s most famous sons was back where he began on the weekend — just taking a slightly different role for the occasion.
Carlton’s Kade Simpson was at the Bombers’ match against Powelltown on Saturday in the Yarra Valley Mountain District Division 2.
Simpson’s brother Ryan still plays at Emerald, which won the Round 11 match by 35 points.
Kade Simpson, who helped the Blues beat Gold Coast Suns on Sunday by 34 points, umpired a specially organised match between under-nine and under-10 players at half-time in the senior match. He also presented the Kade Simpson Medal to the player voted best on ground, which went to Emerald’s Caillin Porter.
Meanwhile, Geelong Umpires celebrated its 80th anniversary on the weekend and Nishanth Narayanan became the first Indian-born umpire to officiate a senior match in the Bendigo Umpires Association.
