AFLcountry thumbPeter Knights and his team of selectors have settled on a 39-man Vic Country No.1 Squad for the July 11 clash against the Victorian Amateur Football Association.

Vic Country No.1 will play the best of the VAFA in Bendigo at the Queen Elizabeth Oval on Saturday July 11 in a special twilight fixture.

The game will kick off at 4.05 pm and follow two other representative clashes, with the Vic Country U19s to meet VAFA U19s at 10.15am and Vic Country No.2 set to tackle VAFA 2 (Prem B – Div 4) at 1.10pm.

While the squad will eventually be trimmed to 22 players ahead of a final training session in the week leading up to the match, the initial offering contains a list of highly experienced stars.

Tim Looby (Goulburn Valley,) Chris Giampaolo (Ballarat), Jack Geary (Bendigo), Lachlan Wallace (Peninsula) and Dan Nicholls (Gippsland) form a select group of players who represented Vic Country in the historic clash with Vic Metro last year, but are joined by a host of experienced interleague campaigners.

Former All-Australians Grant Weeks (Heathcote & District FL), Justin Van Unen (Peninsula), Tyson Hartwig (Ovens & Murray FL) and Ryan O'Sullivan (Central Murray FL) have all been included, alongside James Linton (Geelong FL) and Derek Micalleff (Ballarat FL) who were part of the team that lost to the VAFA by three points in 2013.

Other familiar faces include former Bendgo Gold captain Steven Stoobants (Goulburn Valley), former North Ballarat running machine Nathan Horbury (Ballarat FL) and former Richmond forward Brett O'Hanlon who was crucial in the Peninsula FL's victory over O&M in the 2015 WorkSafe Country Championships.

But the list of country stars doesn't stop there.

O&M guns Brayden O'Hara (Central Districts – SANFL) and Dean Polo (Richmond) have a wealth of big game experience, while speed machine Dane McFarlane (Geelong FL) set the field alight as his side ran over the Goulburn Valley FL in the 1v2 Country Champs play-off.

Coach Peter Knights said he was excited by the mix of players at his disposal this year.

"While there are only five players who represented Vic County last year, we have selected a number of guys who are proven players at this level," Knights said.

"I've been lucky enough to coach some of these guys in past and know what they can offer, while I'm really looking forward at getting a firsthand look at several others who could be wearing the Big V for the first time."

"Regardless of who makes the final squad, I know we are going to have team that will play with that fantastic Vic Country spirit which has been synonymous with these sides in the past."

Knights will be supported in 2014 by assistants Joe McLaren, Mark Sandilands, Ash Campbell and Scott Beattie.

Vic Country No.1 has lost the past two encounters with the VAFA, both by less than six points, and will be out to ensure the streak doesn't climb to three when the teams clash on July 11.

The Vic Country U19 Squad and Vic Country 2 Squad will be announced in the coming days.
