Weekly Times | FIRE destroyed Woorinen Football Club’s facilities early this morning.
CFA crews were called to the football club on Reserve Road at 1.40am and the fire was brought under control at 2.30am.
Eight crews from Swan Hill, Nyah, Beverford, Lake Boga and Woorinen attended the fire, which could reportedly be seen from the township.
A CFA fire investigator was on the scene this morning. A police spokesman said the scene was still being processed but police did not believe it was suspicious.
CFA District 18 operations officer John Breaks described it as a “real blow for the community”.
“Unfortunately when our members arrived there was nothing left to be salvaged,” he said.
Woorinen, from the Central Murray Football League, is scheduled to play Kerang at Kerang tomorrow.
In a statement on the club’s Facebook page, Woorinen club president Grant Jones and vice president Dean Morpeth thanked firefighters and police for their assistance.
“Over night (sic) there was a fire, which completely burnt through our facility, from the kitchen right through to the opposition change rooms. There is nothing standing other than the steel beam structures,” the statement said.
The committee is meeting today to discuss the match day tasks for tomorrow.
“After this we will work through the processes required to take the steps to keep our proud club running as per normal as possible,” it said.
Jones and Morpeth asked people to keep clear of the “unsafe” site until it was assessed, and for the club committee to be given space today to concentrate on planning.
Arrangements for future trainings and home games are yet to be made.
“This will be a long process and will be extremely tough on everyone, but we are a strong and proud club. We have a tight community attitude that will allow the club to work through this step by step,” they said.
“Please keep an eye out for future updates which will allow members to offer assistance.”
