Weekly Times | RETURNING to football gave Woorinen’s players, coaches and supporters something to smile about after a devastating fire destroyed their clubrooms last week.
On Friday morning the Tigers’ clubrooms burnt down, but the Central Murray league side tended to their first assignment since the ordeal in the best way possible, knocking off top-of-the-table Kerang by 11 points on Saturday.
Woorinen club president Grant Jones said it was essential the club put the event behind it and kept “moving forward”.
“That was the most important thing for me — to get our coaches and players back to thinking about footy,” Jones said.
“As a club, we’ve got a really big month ahead of us. We must to keep winning to get anywhere.
“I can worry about the other stuff.”
The emotional upset victory lifted the Tigers into fourth spot. Jones believed it was the first time in more than a decade his club had defeated Kerang.
He thanked the football community for their messages of support and offers of assistance.
Woorinen has been forced to reschedule training and its two remaining home fixtures due to the fire. It will play Lake Boga away this weekend, not at home as scheduled.
The venue for its Round 17 home fixture against Koondrook Barham is yet to be determined.
The Tigers will train at Tyntynder’s Alan Garden Reserve for the remainder of the season.
